Maurizio Cattelan’s America
“Everything here is literal: the toilet is operational, the gold is solid and America is whatever you think it is, so long as you really mean it.”
We were tasked with creating a cohesive visual identity for Maurizio Cattelan’s America—a fully functional toilet cast from 101.2 kg of 18-karat gold. Previously installed at the Guggenheim, America is a landmark work that blends art, satire, and cultural commentary. Featured as a highlight of Sotheby’s Now and Contemporary Evening Auction during the inaugural sales at the Breuer building in November 2025, the work opened with a starting bid equal to its weight in gold. As part of the campaign, Sotheby’s temporarily reimagined its logo in reference to the piece, creating a playful touchpoint that generated curiosity and drew attention to the auction.
